The Cocoa Room Riverview - 2015 Phenomenal Woman of the Year Laureate

An Entrepreneurial Spirit Ignited at an Early Age; Tosha Whalen Pursues Passion for Creating Memorable Experiences

This year’s Phenomenal Woman of the Year is Tosha Whalen, co-owner of the Cocoa Riverview. The Cocoa Riverview is a full-service venue that offers food, beverage, floral, décor and event coordination. Growing up, Tosha was always surrounded by pretty things, with her mom being an interior decorator. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for making things look great and throwing parties was ignited at an early age where she planned her first family show at the age of five.

Tosha started her education at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish where she studied jazz for a year. She returned to her native province and obtained her bachelor’s in business administration degree from Crandall University. Tosha and her sister Melanie Warner started their first business in 2009 called Pink Lady Cleaning, serving the Greater Moncton Area where they cleaned offices and homes for two years.

In 2010, when her sister and business partner, was getting married; the duo attended a bridal show in Moncton. They both thought to themselves, “We could totally do this,” which is also their motto today! They started out in their parent’s kitchen and began selling wedding decors, coordinating weddings and made floral arrangements, all this while both working for an engineering firm.

With increased demand for their service, the two left their full-time jobs and decided to pursue their passion. By September of 2010, they gained access to funding opportunities and opened a boutique in Dieppe. Tosha recalls passing by the Chocolate River Station (a former fire station) with her sister when they were younger and both dreaming of turning it into something great. In January 2013, the super team purchased the building and made their dream a reality.

Tosha says that the use of technology sets the Cocoa Riverview apart from competitors. Being able to access all information online, from booking events to receiving quotes enables clients and staff to stay on track and as a result, have a memorable experience.

According to this positive individual, the most rewarding aspect of being an entrepreneur is being able to create your own lifestyle on a personal level. If she could share a best practice to futurepreneurs, “It’s being optimistic, always wanting to grow and always thinking of new ideas to grow your passion." Tosha is always looking ahead and hopes to open three more venues in the near future.

“We continue to be a huge success, what a pipeline we have created with getting together and exchanging our views, thoughts and goals.  We continue to have a list of names asking to be added to our distribution list and this shows the strength we have in our communities.  I enjoy the time we spend together exchanging ideas and hopes that we can make a difference one woman at a time.”
