Cater to Your Health

Cater to Your Health is what Kelly Etheridge does and she does it well. When sampling her food, it is incredible to believe it is actually good for you. Raising six children, Kelly wanted to ensure her family received nutritious foods that they would enjoy. And, enjoy they sure did! She was so good at what she does that around Quispamsis, NB, she was known as a gourmet chef and therefore started catering to small crowds and events. Like Kelly would say, “I never knew how to cook for a small crowd.”

With her passion for cooking shining right through her and vision of creating healthy food alternatives, Kelly decided to open her own business. Kelly and her husband of twenty-six years were used to taking business risks, so they purchased a commercial kitchen… and the rest is history.

Some of Kelly’s products include homemade salsa, muffins, pizza crust, cookies and whole grain breads (specializing in grains such as spelt). Also, she also is the only person East of Montreal to cater using whole wheat phyllo pastry, allowing her to make oven baked samozas and spanikopitas. It is no wonder how Kelly recently secured a contract with Xerox, a company that employs over 300 people. Her contract has generated a lot of enthusiasm from managers and employees alike as her specialty gourmet coffees, lunch, breakfast and snacks are sure to be a treat. Kelly also retails her products in St. Andrews, at the Kingston Market and at the Saint John market (fall and winter). In addition, she has just been accepted to the Fredericton Market…so step in line!

Cater Your Health has experienced significant growth in six months. She now, with her husband as her right-hand administrator has two full-time employees, five part-time and is also hiring. She credits success to an excellent team, including a production manager with an amazing work ethic. It is a past-paced industry where you are on the go 125 per cent of the time. Her goal is to secure a location in Saint John and to hire more staff to ensure full scale production.

Kelly is grateful of the support she received from Danielle Sullivan, development officer with the NB Association of CBDCs. “Danielle was with me from day one offering solid support and helping with cash flow management.” She also credits the local CBDC office for providing her with a Business Loan.

If Kelly could give advice to others, she says to, “Be willing to step out in faith and do something you believe in. If you have faith, you can ride out the tough storms.” She also adds, “Find something you are passionate about so you can get paid to do so.”
